New works and concepts
Art installation. Acrylic, mixed media and LED installation on gallery canvas
Painting has always been a passion of mine. I can’t remember a time in my life where I didn’t draw, sketch or paint. I remember as a child of 10, visiting Europe and being inspired and awed by the Art and architecture. This childhood wonder and interest, led me to studies in Fine Arts Studio/Theory with a minor in Psychology at York University. Art has always defined me, and now in turn, I define my art. I am a product of my environment and experiences, and in turn my art is a culmination of all things experienced. This is who I am.
I start with a general idea, usually base on nature or our landscape and allow my senses to perceive and feel the canvas, paint and tools, all the while processing my environment. My unconscious guides me through the process. My art is influenced by the world around me. I am a conduit expressing the world around me, and inevitably themes will surface while I paint. We are complicate, layered creatures and there exist many levels of thought, both conscious and unconscious. I often find that I begin working with a general concept, but at the end of a piece, I find something unspoken or new has manifested itself on my canvas. Therefore, my art has always been therapeutic. A tremendous influence in my art is Nature and the aesthetic appreciation of the natural environment and our place in it. I am inspired by Nature and the World we live in, both urban and natural. I search to elicit joy and happiness and a feeling of newness in my paintings, the way a person feels when they are with Nature. In spite of a chaotic modern world, we often find peace and solace in the quiet serenity of the natural environment. It is where I retreat to. It is where I find balance and order.
I have always had a need to understand the human spirit and our journey to develop and discover ourselves. Experimenting with different textures, mediums and light allows me to explore the idea of transformation and change and our journey to becoming mature, awakened beings. I use colour and texture and light as a metaphor for the human spirit and the human need to search for identity. We are always changing and in motion and my art is an exploration of spiritual and mental awakening, or transformation amidst chaos. It is about the Hope and Happiness in a world we often clash with.
The works you see today are part of a series, that I have been working on for a number of years. All of the paintings are acrylic, with various polymers and mixed media and/or resin. I use these mediums to paint and sculpt a story on canvas. I rarely use a brush, but allow my hands and other tools to explore and sculpt the canvas. In my next series, which I am currently working on, I introduce multimedia Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), to explore the nature of transformation and metamorphosis. The LED lights are adjustable and can also be configured for sound waves and will change colour based on sound. This creates a completely different experience each time a person looks at the canvas, and has a direct relation to how important music is in my life. I am very excited about this new project, as it has been an idea which I have been developing for some time. I hope to be able to share this with you all soon.
You will note that a number of pieces say donated, as I believe in volunteering and supporting our community. The best way I can do that, is to offer my pieces pro bono.
Thank you for your interest and I hope you enjoy my art. Thank you.
